Best Flooring for Humid Climate What Works and What Does Not
Humid climates are hard on flooring. High outdoor humidity, coastal moisture, and seasonal rain all increase the moisture load inside a home. Some flooring products handle it well. Others fail within months. Here is what works and what does not.
Why Humidity Damages Flooring
Flooring materials respond to moisture in the air and moisture vapor from the ground. In humid climates, both sources are elevated. The floor never gets a dry season to recover.
Products with wood content are the most vulnerable. Laminate, engineered hardwood, and solid hardwood all absorb moisture from humid air. They swell, cup, and buckle. Waterproof laminate is more resistant to liquid spills but still responds to air humidity.
SPC Flooring in Humid Climates
SPC is waterproof at the core level. The PVC and limestone mix does not absorb water. But SPC has a different problem in humid climates.
Moisture vapor rising from concrete subfloors is higher in humid regions. Even with a vapor barrier, some moisture reaches the underside of the SPC. Over time, the plank edges curl upward. The curl is subtle at first but becomes visible over months.
SPC also has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion in humid heat. The combination of heat and humidity in coastal regions accelerates the dimensional changes. Planks expand and contract more than in dry climates.
LVT in Humid Climates
LVT has similar issues. The PVC core is waterproof but the installation relies on adhesive or click locks. In high humidity, the adhesive can weaken. Click lock LVT shows the same edge curling as SPC.
What Works in Humid Climates
Tile is the traditional choice. It handles humidity without issues. But tile is cold, hard, and expensive to install.
MFB flooring is the best alternative. The mineral fiber core does not absorb moisture from air or subfloor. It does not curl at the edges. It does not require a vapor barrier on concrete subfloors.
MFB can be installed in coastal homes, basements in humid regions, and rooms with high indoor humidity. The surface finish resists the mold and mildew that can grow on other flooring in damp conditions.
Installation Tips for Humid Climates
Acclimate the flooring in the installation room for 48 hours. Run the air conditioning during installation. Leave standard expansion gaps. Use a dehumidifier in the room for the first week after installation.
