What Is Better Than Waterproof Laminate for Moisture Prone Areas
Waterproof laminate flooring handles spills better than standard laminate. The core is treated to resist moisture. But the core is still wood based. It can still swell if water sits long enough or if humidity stays high.
For areas with real moisture challenges, a different core technology exists: mineral fiber board.
The Core Difference
Waterproof laminate uses a high density fiberboard (HDF) core with water resistant treatment. The treatment helps, but the wood fibers inside can still absorb moisture when exposed for extended periods.
MFB flooring uses a mineral fiber core. The mineral material does not absorb water. It does not swell. It does not expand or contract with humidity changes. The core is inert.
This difference matters in:
Basements with concrete slabs. Moisture from the concrete can travel through a vapor barrier over time. Waterproof laminate may handle occasional moisture. MFB handles continuous moisture without damage.
Bathrooms near showers. Splashes and humidity are normal. Waterproof laminate can handle surface moisture if wiped quickly. MFB can handle standing water without risk.
Sunrooms and covered patios. Temperature swings cause expansion and contraction in wood based cores. MFB mineral core stays dimensionally stable.
Why Not Just Use SPC
SPC has a stone plastic composite core that is waterproof at the plank level. But SPC contains PVC plastic, which some buyers want to avoid. SPC also expands and contracts more than MFB with temperature changes because PVC is a thermoplastic.
MFB combines the waterproof performance with PVC free material and better dimensional stability.
