Can Laminate Flooring Be Installed Over Concrete Subfloor

Laminate can be installed over concrete but it requires careful preparation. Concrete subfloors present moisture challenges that laminate is sensitive to.

Moisture Test Is Required

Before installing laminate over concrete, test the moisture content of the concrete. Use a calcium chloride test or a moisture meter. The moisture level should be below 4 percent for most laminate products. If the moisture is above 4 percent, the laminate will absorb moisture from the concrete and swell. Install a vapor barrier to protect the laminate.

Vapor Barrier Is Essential

A 6 mil polyethylene vapor barrier is required between the concrete and the laminate. The vapor barrier prevents moisture from the concrete from reaching the laminate. Overlap vapor barrier seams by 6 inches and tape them. Extend the vapor barrier up the wall by 2 inches. Trim after baseboard installation.

Underlayment on Concrete

Place the underlayment on top of the vapor barrier. Use a foam underlayment designed for laminate over concrete. Some underlayments have a built in vapor barrier which eliminates the need for separate polyethylene film. Check the underlayment specifications before purchasing.

Concrete Curing Time

New concrete must cure for at least 60 days before installing laminate. The concrete needs time to release excess moisture. Installing laminate over uncured concrete guarantees moisture damage. Test the concrete moisture before installation even if it has been curing for months.

Concrete Flatness

Concrete subfloors must be flat for laminate installation. Maximum flatness tolerance is 3mm over 2 meters. Use self leveling compound to correct dips. Grind down high spots.

Temperature Considerations

Concrete subfloors in basements are cold. Laminate over concrete without proper underlayment feels cold underfoot. Use an insulated underlayment with thermal barrier properties. Area rugs help with warmth in sitting areas.

Risk of Laminate Over Concrete

Laminate over concrete carries more risk than laminate over wood subfloor. Moisture from the concrete can reach the laminate even with a vapor barrier if the barrier is damaged during installation. For basements or concrete slab on grade, consider MFB flooring which handles sustained moisture better than laminate.

About PROLEADER

PROLEADER recommends MFB flooring for basement concrete subfloors. For above grade concrete installations, our laminate products can be used with proper vapor barrier. Contact us for installation guidelines.
