Can SPC Flooring Be Installed Over Radiant Heating 2024

Many homeowners want the comfort of radiant heating with the durability of SPC flooring. The good news is that SPC is compatible with radiant heating systems when installed correctly. This guide explains what you need to know.

Is SPC Flooring Compatible With Radiant Heating

Yes. SPC flooring is compatible with radiant heating systems. The stone plastic composite core conducts heat better than wood or laminate. SPC is dimensionally stable and will not expand or contract with temperature changes like other flooring types. This makes it one of the best flooring choices for radiant heating.

Temperature Limits

The maximum surface temperature for SPC flooring over radiant heat is 85 degrees Fahrenheit or 29 degrees Celsius. Higher temperatures can damage the flooring. The temperature should be increased gradually when first using the system. Increase by 5 degrees per day to allow the flooring to adjust. Never turn the system on full heat immediately after installation.

Installation Guidelines

Let the SPC flooring acclimate in the room for 24 hours before installation. Turn off the radiant heating system during installation. Allow the system to cool to room temperature before installing. Leave the system off for 48 hours after installation before turning it back on. Increase the temperature gradually over several days after installation.

Best SPC Thickness for Radiant Heating

5mm SPC is the best thickness for radiant heating. It conducts heat well while still providing good durability. 4mm conducts heat the best but has less durability. 6mm works but heat transfer is slower. 8mm is not recommended for radiant heating because heat transfer is significantly reduced.

Type of Radiant Heating System

Electric radiant heating systems work well with SPC flooring. The cables or mats should be installed in a thin layer of self leveling compound. Hydronic radiant heating with water tubes also works well. The tubes must be properly embedded in the subfloor. SPC should not be installed directly over hydronic tubes without proper thermal mass.

Underlayment Considerations

Use underlayment specifically designed for radiant heating systems. Standard foam underlayment can insulate the heat and reduce efficiency. Look for underlayment with low thermal resistance. Some SPC products with attached underlayment are suitable for radiant heating.
