Can SPC Flooring Be Used in Mobile Homes and RVs

SPC flooring can be installed in mobile homes and RVs. The weight is moderate and the waterproof performance is valuable for vehicles. This guide covers the special considerations for these applications.

Weight Considerations

SPC flooring is heavier than carpet but lighter than tile. For a standard RV, the total weight of SPC flooring is manageable. A 200 square foot installation adds approximately 150 to 200 pounds to the vehicle weight.

Consider the weight distribution when planning the installation. Heavy flooring in the rear of an RV can affect towing balance. Distribute the flooring weight evenly across the vehicle.

Subfloor Requirements

Mobile homes and RVs often have thin plywood subfloors. Check the subfloor thickness before installation. A minimum of 5/8 inch plywood is needed for SPC installation. If the subfloor is thinner, add reinforcement.

Check for soft spots or water damage in the subfloor. Mobile home subfloors are prone to moisture damage. Replace any damaged sections before installing SPC.

Installation Considerations

Use click lock SPC for mobile home and RV installation. Glue down installation is not recommended because the subfloor flexes during transport. Floating installation allows the floor to move with the vehicle.

Leave slightly larger expansion gaps than in a standard home. Temperature changes in an RV are more extreme. The floor needs room to expand and contract.
