What Is Drop Lock SPC Flooring vs Click Lock Which Is Better

SPC flooring uses different locking mechanisms to connect planks. Drop lock and click lock are the two most common systems. Each has advantages and disadvantages. This guide explains the differences and the correct installation technique for each.

Click Lock System

Click lock is the most common locking system for SPC flooring. The planks are joined by inserting the short side first, then angling the long side at about 20 to 30 degrees and lowering it into position. This sequence is different from laminate flooring installation.

Correct technique for click lock:

1. Align the short side tongue into the groove of the adjacent plank. Ensure the short side is fully seated before moving to the long side.

2. Once the short side is connected, angle the plank at 20 to 30 degrees and slide the long side tongue into the groove of the row above.

3. Lower the plank flat. The long side locking mechanism engages.

4. Use light pressure on the short side to confirm the connection is fully seated before moving to the next plank.

Common mistake: Some installers try to tap the short side with a hammer and tapping block, the same way they install laminate flooring. This damages the SPC locking profile. SPC is rigid PVC, not wood fiber. Unlike laminate, the locking mechanism in SPC does not recover with moisture absorption.

In laminate flooring, a damaged locking profile may still regain grip over time as the wood fiber core absorbs humidity and expands. SPC does not expand. Once the locking profile is damaged, the connection is permanently weakened. The plank will separate under foot traffic.

Correct tool use: Use a tapping block only on the long side, and only with light taps. Never strike the short side locking profile directly.

Drop Lock System

Drop lock is a newer locking system. The planks are joined by dropping one plank straight down onto the other. The locking mechanism engages vertically without angling. The planks are aligned side by side and the new plank is pressed down into position. The mechanism clicks when engaged.

Advantages of click lock:

- Strongest connection between planks

- Can be disassembled and reinstalled

- Available on most SPC products

- Proven technology used for years

Disadvantages of click lock:

- Requires correct technique: short side first, then angle the long side

- Using hammer on short side damages the lock permanently

- More difficult to replace a single plank

Advantages of drop lock:

- Easier installation, no angling required

- Less risk of damaging the locking profile

- Good for DIY beginners

Disadvantages of drop lock:

- Weaker connection than click lock

- Cannot be disassembled as easily

- Less common, fewer product options

- May separate under heavy traffic over time

Which Is Better

For most installations, click lock with proper technique provides the strongest and most durable floor. The key is installing the planks correctly: short side first, then angle and lower the long side.

Drop lock is a good alternative for DIY installers who want easier installation and are willing to accept slightly less locking strength.
