How to Fix SPC Flooring Edge Chipping During Installation
Edge chipping is a common problem during SPC flooring installation. The rigid core can chip at the edges if handled improperly. This guide covers how to prevent chipping and how to fix it when it happens.
Causes of Edge Chipping
Edge chipping occurs when the locking mechanism is damaged during installation. Common causes include:
- Using excessive force when tapping planks together
- Tapping the plank directly with a hammer instead of using a tapping block
- Installing in cold temperatures that make the material brittle
- Poor subfloor conditions that cause the planks to flex during tapping
- Low quality SPC with too much calcium carbonate in the core
Prevention Methods
Use a proper tapping block at all times. The tapping block distributes force across the plank edge. Never tap the plank directly with a hammer.
Allow SPC to acclimate to room temperature before installation. Cold SPC is more brittle and prone to chipping. Installation temperature should be above 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
Apply gentle, consistent tapping force. Do not use heavy force to close gaps. If the gap does not close with moderate tapping, check for debris in the locking mechanism.
Fixing Small Chips
For small chips that do not affect the locking mechanism, use a color matched repair marker or wax crayon. Fill the chip and smooth the surface.
For chips on the visible surface after locking, apply a small amount of clear epoxy to seal the chipped area. Smooth the epoxy before it cures.
Fixing Chipped Locking Mechanisms
If the locking mechanism is chipped and the plank does not lock properly, the plank should be replaced. A chipped lock will not hold securely and can cause gapping later.
Remove the chipped plank and replace it with a new one. Keep the chipped plank for use in a non critical area where the chipped edge can be cut off.
