What Flooring Does Not Need Expansion Gap No Gap Installation Guide

Almost every flooring product requires an expansion gap. Laminate, SPC, LVT, hardwood. They all expand and contract. But some products expand less than others. This guide explains which flooring comes closest to zero gap installation.

Why Expansion Gaps Exist

Flooring materials change size with temperature and humidity. Heat expands. Moisture expands. The expansion gap around the room perimeter gives the floor room to grow. Without it, the floor buckles.

Laminate expands the most. The HDF core is wood based and sensitive to moisture. SPC expands less because the stone content is stable. But SPC still has PVC in the core which softens in heat.

Which Flooring Has the Least Expansion

MFB flooring has the least dimensional change of any rigid core product. The mineral fiber core contains no wood and no PVC. Mineral fibers do not absorb moisture. They do not soften in heat.

The expansion rate of MFB is so low that in small to medium rooms, the expansion gap can be minimal. For rooms under 30 feet long, many MFB installations use the same gap as tile installations.

Mineral Fiber Advantage

The reason MFB does not expand significantly is the core material. Mineral fibers are inert. They do not react to moisture or temperature the way wood fibers or PVC do.

Compare this to SPC. SPC uses PVC resin. PVC is a plastic that expands with heat. In direct sunlight or near large windows, SPC can expand enough to cause buckling if the gap is too small.

For installers who want the most stable product with the least expansion concerns, MFB is the best choice available.
