Can You Install Flooring Without Baseboards Trimless Flooring Solutions

Baseboards exist to cover the expansion gap between the floor and the wall. If your flooring does not need a large expansion gap, you have more options for a trimless look. This guide covers the possibilities.

Why Baseboards Are Standard

Almost every flooring product requires an expansion gap. This gap is typically 8mm to 12mm wide. The gap is necessary but ugly. Baseboards cover the gap and create a finished look.

Without baseboards, the gap is visible. Dust collects in it. The floor edge is exposed to damage.

Which Flooring Needs the Smallest Gap

Laminate needs a large gap because it expands the most. SPC needs a standard gap. MFB needs the smallest gap of any rigid core product.

The mineral fiber core in MFB expands so little that the gap can be minimal. In rooms under 30 feet, the gap can be as small as 3mm to 5mm. This is small enough to cover with a thin trim profile or even a bead of color matched silicone.

Trimless Installation Options

For a true trimless look, consider these approaches:

Silicone bead: For MFB with minimal expansion, a silicone bead at the wall junction can replace baseboards. The silicone flexes with minor expansion and creates a clean line.

Thin metal trim: A 5mm L shaped metal trim covers a small gap and provides a modern look.

Integrated base shoe: A thin molding that sits flush with the wall and floor.

For laminate and SPC, these options are not reliable because the expansion is too large.
