How to Choose a Freight Forwarder for Flooring Shipments From China 2024

Your freight forwarder is as important as your factory. A good forwarder gets your container delivered on time and handles problems quickly. A bad forwarder creates delays, hidden fees, and frustration. Here is what to look for and what to avoid.

What a Good Freight Forwarder Does

Books container space with shipping lines, arranges trucking from factory to port, handles export customs clearance in China, manages documentation bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list, provides customs brokerage in the US or works with a partner broker, tracks your container and updates you, handles port issues like demurrage and detention.

What to Look For

Experience with flooring or similar heavy dry cargo. Flooring is heavy and dense. Forwarders who specialize in light goods or garments may not understand container weight limits. A good forwarder knows how much SPC fits in a container and can advise on loading.

Responsive communication. Time zone difference matters. Your forwarder should have staff available during both Chinese and US business hours. Ask how quickly they respond to emails and phone calls.

Transparent pricing. A good forwarder gives you a detailed quote with every fee listed. They explain what each charge covers. They do not add surprise fees after your container ships.

Network of partners. Your forwarder should have offices or reliable partners in both China and the US. If something goes wrong at the destination port, they need someone on the ground to fix it.

Red Flags

Quotes that are significantly lower than others. Low prices often come with hidden fees later. Forwarders who cannot clearly explain their fees. Forwarders who do not offer container tracking. Forwarders who ask you to use a specific shipping line without explaining why. Forwarders who do not provide references from other flooring importers.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring

How many flooring shipments have you handled in the past year? What is your process for container tracking and updates? Do you provide customs brokerage or do I need to find my own? What happens if my container misses the scheduled vessel? How do you handle port congestion or delays? Can you provide references from two importers?
