How to Clean and Maintain LVT Flooring Manufacturer Guide

Proper maintenance keeps LVT flooring looking good for years. The wrong cleaning methods can damage the wear layer and void the warranty. This guide covers what to do and what to avoid.

Daily Care

Vacuum or sweep regularly to remove sand and grit. Sand acts like sandpaper on the wear layer. Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment or a microfiber dust mop. Do not use a vacuum with a beater bar. The rotating brush flicks sand across the surface and creates micro scratches.

Damp mop with a pH neutral cleaner once a week. Use a well wrung mop. Excess water seeps into the seams and can reach the subfloor. Even though LVT is waterproof, standing water at the seams can cause edge lifting over time.

Approved Cleaners

Use only pH neutral cleaners specifically designed for LVT or vinyl flooring. Dilute according to the manufacturer instructions.

For tough stains use isopropyl alcohol diluted with equal parts water. Apply to a soft cloth and rub gently.

Cleaners to Avoid

Do not use steam cleaners. High heat and moisture will damage LVT. The steam can delaminate the layers and damage the locking system.

Do not use abrasive or harsh chemical cleaners. Bleach based cleaners damage the color and surface. Ammonia based cleaners dull the wear layer over time. Vinegar is acidic and breaks down the wear layer.

Do not use abrasive scrub pads or stiff bristle brushes. They scratch the surface permanently.

Do not use wax or acrylic finish on LVT. These coatings peel and look worse than the original surface.

Stain Removal Guide

Food stains: wipe immediately with a damp cloth. For dried stains use diluted isopropyl alcohol.

Oil and grease: use a degreaser designed for vinyl flooring. Apply, let sit for 5 minutes, then wipe.

Red wine and coffee: blot immediately. Clean with pH neutral cleaner.

Pet accidents: clean immediately with pH neutral cleaner. Do not use enzyme cleaners designed for carpets.

What Voids the Warranty

Steam cleaning is a common warranty violation. Using unauthorized cleaning chemicals. Allowing standing water on the floor for extended periods. Dragging heavy objects across the floor without protection. Not following the manufacturer maintenance guidelines.
