How to Clean Laminate Flooring Without Damaging the Surface

Laminate flooring is easy to clean but also easy to damage if you use the wrong methods. Excess water, harsh chemicals, and abrasive tools can ruin the surface. Here is how to clean laminate safely.

Daily Cleaning

Sweep or vacuum daily. Dust and grit scratch the surface over time. Use a soft bristle broom or a vacuum with a hard floor setting. Do not use a vacuum with a beater bar. The beater bar can scratch the laminate surface. Use a microfiber dry mop for quick dust removal between vacuuming.

Weekly Cleaning

Damp mop with a well wrung mop. The mop should be almost dry. Do not pour water directly onto the laminate. Spray the cleaner onto the mop, not the floor. Use a cleaner specifically formulated for laminate flooring. pH neutral cleaners are safest. Do not use vinyl floor cleaners on laminate. They can leave a residue that attracts dirt.

What to Avoid

Do not use steam mops. Steam forces moisture into the laminate seams. The moisture swells the HDF core permanently. Do not use wet mops. Standing water on laminate is dangerous. Do not use bleach, ammonia, or vinegar. These damage the wear layer. Do not use wax or polish. Laminate has a factory finish that does not need wax. Do not use abrasive scrub pads or steel wool.

Spot Cleaning

For sticky spots, use a damp cloth with a small amount of mild dish soap. Wipe dry immediately after cleaning. For scuff marks, use a pencil eraser or a melamine sponge gently. For gum or adhesive, use ice to harden it, then scrape gently with a plastic scraper.

Deep Cleaning

Laminate does not need deep cleaning like tile or grout. A damp mop every 2 to 4 weeks is sufficient. If the floor looks dull, it may have residue buildup from improper cleaners. Use a laminate floor cleaner specifically designed to remove residue.

Prevention

Place mats at all entrances to trap dirt. Use felt pads under furniture legs. Trim pet nails regularly. Wipe up spills immediately. Do not allow water to sit on the surface.

How Laminate Cleaning Differs From SPC

Laminate is more sensitive to moisture than SPC. SPC can handle damp mopping more frequently. Laminate requires the mop to be nearly dry. SPC can handle slightly more moisture. Laminate should never be steam mopped. SPC also should not be steam mopped. Both should use pH neutral cleaners.
