How to Compare SPC Flooring Samples From Different Factories

When sourcing SPC flooring from multiple factories, comparing samples is the only reliable way to assess quality. This guide provides a systematic comparison method that covers all critical quality indicators.

Sample Request

Request full size samples from each factory. Mini samples or small squares do not show the full plank quality. Each sample should be at least 6 inches wide and 12 inches long.

Request sample from the same product specification you plan to order. Do not compare a 5mm sample from one factory with a 6mm sample from another. Compare similar thickness, wear layer, and core density.

Thickness Measurement

Measure the actual thickness of each sample with a caliper. The nominal thickness may be different from the actual thickness. A 5mm product should measure 4.8mm to 5.2mm.

Check thickness consistency across the sample. Measure at four corners and the center. Variation over 0.2mm indicates poor production control.

Also compare the thickness between samples from the same factory. If two samples of the same product have different thicknesses, the factory has quality consistency issues.

Weight and Density

Weigh each sample. SPC density is a key quality indicator. Denser SPC is more durable and resistant to indentation. A standard 5mm SPC sample should weigh approximately 8 to 10 kg per square meter.

Lighter samples may have too much calcium carbonate and not enough PVC. This makes the product brittle and prone to edge chipping.

Locking Mechanism Test

This is the most important comparison. Test how each sample locks with others from the same factory. The lock should engage with moderate pressure. It should not require excessive force.

Test locking at the short end and the long side. A poor lock at either end will cause problems during installation.

Disconnect the locked sample and inspect the profile for damage. A good locking mechanism can be locked and unlocked multiple times without visible wear.

Surface Quality

Inspect the surface under good lighting. Look for:

- Print clarity: the wood grain should be sharp, not blurry

- Embossing alignment: registered embossing should match the print

- Gloss level: should be consistent across the surface

- Texture depth: deeper texture looks more realistic

Scratch resistance test: drag a coin across the surface with moderate pressure. A good wear layer should not show a visible scratch. A poor wear layer will scratch easily.

Wear Layer Test

Place a drop of acetone on the sample surface for 60 seconds. Wipe it off. If the surface finish is damaged or dulled, the wear layer is low quality. Quality wear layers resist acetone.

For a more practical test, place the sample in a high traffic area of your office or warehouse for one month. Check the surface condition weekly. This real world test shows wear performance better than any lab test.

Moisture Resistance

Place a few drops of water on the sample surface and let it sit for 24 hours. Wipe dry and check for any absorption marks on the surface or edges. Water should bead on the surface and not absorb.

For core moisture resistance, submerge a small piece of the sample in water for 1 hour. Remove and check for weight increase. Quality SPC shows minimal weight gain.

Color and Design Evaluation

Compare color accuracy between samples. Check if the color matches the factory catalog. Some factories show enhanced colors in catalogs that differ from actual production.

Evaluate the design repeat pattern. Smaller repeat patterns look less natural. Larger repeat patterns look more like real wood.

Shipping and Lead Time

Samples shipped quickly indicate good communication and customer service. Slow sample delivery suggests the factory has communication issues or is not serious about new customers.

Note which factory provides clear product labeling, professional packaging, and accurate documentation with samples. These details indicate the level of professionalism you can expect.
