How to Prevent SPC Flooring Damage During Shipping 2024

SPC flooring travels thousands of miles from factory to destination. Damage during shipping can result in broken locking edges and unusable planks. This guide explains how to prevent and handle shipping damage.

How Shipping Damage Happens

Improper pallet packaging is the most common cause. Planks that are not securely strapped to pallets shift during transit and the edges get damaged. Forklift handling at ports can damage pallets if not handled carefully. Container shifting during ocean freight can cause pallets to tip and planks to break. Humidity changes inside containers can affect the flooring if not properly wrapped.

Prevention Measures

Use reinforced pallets that can withstand stacking during shipping. Protect the pallet corners with corner guards. Stretch wrap each pallet completely to keep planks secure. Use edge protectors on the locking edges of the planks. Place a waterproof barrier between the pallet and the flooring to protect against moisture. Include desiccant packs inside the container to control humidity.

Inspection Upon Arrival

Inspect the container and pallets for visible damage before opening. Document any damage with photos and notes. Open one or two cartons from each pallet to check for damage. Check the locking edges on random planks for cracks or chips. Document any damage found and report to the freight company.

Claims Process

File a claim with the shipping company within the required timeframe. Provide photos of the damage and the packing list. Keep all damaged product for inspection if needed.
