How to Store SPC Flooring Before Installation Temperature and Humidity Guide

SPC flooring is more durable than laminate but still requires proper storage before installation. Improper storage can cause warping, locking mechanism damage, or surface issues. This guide covers correct storage conditions.

Temperature Requirements

SPC flooring should be stored at temperatures between 50 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures below 40 degrees can cause the PVC to become brittle. The planks may crack when handled or installed.

Temperatures above 100 degrees can cause the planks to soften. The planks may warp or deform if stored in a hot warehouse or container.

Do not store SPC flooring in direct sunlight through windows. Sunlight heats the surface to temperatures higher than the room air temperature.

Humidity Requirements

SPC is less sensitive to humidity than laminate but still needs reasonable humidity levels. Store SPC at 35 to 65 percent relative humidity. Very dry conditions below 30 percent can cause slight contraction. Very humid conditions above 70 percent can affect the packaging.

If the planks have attached underlayment, humidity control is more important. The underlayment can absorb moisture from humid air.

Storage Location

Store SPC flooring in the room where it will be installed. This allows the planks to acclimate to the room conditions. If the room is not ready, store the flooring in a climate controlled area.

Do not store SPC flooring in basements without moisture control. Basement humidity is often too high for storage. Do not store in attics where temperatures fluctuate.

Stacking Method

Stack SPC cartons flat on the floor. Do not stand them on end. Cartons stacked on end can cause the planks to bow. Stack cartons in a stable stack no more than 4 cartons high.

Place cartons on a pallet or platform if the floor is concrete. Concrete can transfer moisture to the carton bottom. A plastic sheet under the stack provides additional moisture protection.

Duration of Storage

SPC flooring can be stored for extended periods under proper conditions. The product has a shelf life of several years in proper storage. The main concern is packaging condition rather than product degradation.

Check stored SPC periodically. Look for signs of moisture damage on cartons or planks. Check that the stack has not shifted or settled.

Moving Stored Flooring

When moving SPC flooring from storage to installation area, move cartons individually. Do not slide stacks across the floor. Sliding can damage the bottom cartons and the planks inside.

Allow the flooring to reach room temperature before opening cartons. Cold planks taken directly from a cold storage area can condense moisture on the surface. Allow 24 hours temperature adjustment.
