LVT Flooring and Heavy Furniture What You Need to Know
LVT is a vinyl product with a flexible core. Heavy furniture can leave permanent dents in the surface. Here is how to prevent damage.
Why LVT Dents
LVT has a flexible PVC core. When heavy weight is placed on a small area, the PVC compresses. The compression becomes permanent over time. The dent remains after the furniture is moved. The weight of the furniture is not the only factor. The surface area of the furniture legs matters. A sharp leg with a small contact area creates more pressure than a wide leg. The duration of the weight matters. Furniture that stays in the same position for years creates deeper dents.
Furniture Types That Cause Dents
Piano legs are heavy and small. They almost always dent LVT. Bed and sofa legs are moderately heavy. They can dent LVT over time. Dining table legs distribute weight but can still dent. Desk and office chair legs are common causes of dents. Refrigerators and heavy appliances can dent LVT if installed directly.
Prevention
Use furniture pads under all furniture legs. Felt pads are best for LVT. Check pads regularly and replace when worn. Felt pads wear out and need periodic replacement. Hard plastic glides can still dent LVT. Soft rubber pads distribute weight better. Use wide furniture coasters for heavy items like pianos and large cabinets. Coasters distribute weight over a larger area. For heavy appliances, use appliance mats.
Moving Furniture
Lift furniture when moving it. Do not drag it across the LVT surface. Use furniture sliders under the legs when rearranging a room. Protect the LVT with cardboard or a rug when moving heavy items.
What to Do About Existing Dents
Minor dents from furniture may be visible only from certain angles. These are cosmetic and do not affect performance. Deep dents that show the texture of the furniture leg are permanent. The plank may need replacement if the dent is noticeable. Use area rugs to cover dents in visible areas.
Compare to Other Flooring
SPC is more dent resistant than LVT. The rigid stone plastic core does not compress as easily. Laminate is also more dent resistant than LVT. Tile does not dent at all. Carpet hides dents completely. LVT is the most prone to denting among hard surface flooring because the core is flexible.
