LVT Flooring FAQs Installation Durability and Care Questions
This FAQ covers the most common questions about LVT flooring from a manufacturer perspective.
Q: How long does LVT flooring last?
A: LVT flooring lasts 10 to 20 years depending on the wear layer thickness and traffic level. A 12 mil wear layer in a residential home lasts 10 to 15 years. A 20 mil wear layer in the same home lasts 15 to 20 years. Commercial installations with 20 to 28 mil wear layer last 5 to 10 years depending on traffic.
Q: Is LVT flooring safe for bathrooms?
A: Yes. LVT is 100 percent waterproof. For bathrooms glue down LVT is recommended because it seals the edges better than click lock. Ensure the subfloor is properly prepared and sealed.
Q: Can LVT be installed over existing tile?
A: Click lock LVT can be installed over existing tile if the tile is flat and the grout lines are not too deep. Fill deep grout lines with leveling compound first. Glue down LVT cannot be installed directly over tile because the surface must be smooth.
Q: Does LVT need underlayment?
A: Only click lock LVT without an attached pad needs underlayment. Use 1mm to 2mm underlayment. LVT with an attached pad does not need additional underlayment.
Q: How do you cut LVT flooring?
A: Use a utility knife with the score and snap method for straight cuts. For curved cuts use a jigsaw with a fine tooth blade. For glue down LVT a straight edge and utility knife work well.
Q: Can LVT be repaired?
A: Yes. Individual planks in click lock LVT can be replaced. Cut out the damaged plank and install a replacement. Glue down LVT planks are more difficult to replace because the adhesive must be removed.
Q: Is LVT flooring good for basements?
A: Yes. LVT is one of the best choices for basements. It is waterproof and does not promote mold growth. Use a vapor barrier under LVT when installing over concrete.
Q: Does LVT fade in sunlight?
A: LVT can fade with prolonged direct sunlight. Quality LVT has UV coating that resists fading. Use curtains, blinds, or UV window film to protect the floor in rooms with direct sun exposure.
Q: What subfloor preparation is needed for LVT?
A: The subfloor must be clean, dry, flat, and structurally sound. Maximum flatness tolerance is 3mm within 2 meters. Concrete moisture must be below 95 percent RH. For concrete subfloors use a 6 mil polyethylene vapor barrier.
Q: What is the difference between extruded LVT and hot pressed LVT?
A: Extruded LVT is made by continuous extrusion through a heated die. It offers better dimensional stability, consistent thickness, and lower cost. Hot pressed LVT uses heat and pressure to bond layers. It has stronger layer bonding and clearer embossing but costs more. Extruded LVT is the mainstream choice for most projects.
