LVT Flooring Thickness and Wear Layer Guide What to Choose
LVT flooring comes in different thicknesses and wear layer grades. Choosing the right combination determines how long your floor lasts. This guide explains what each specification means.
Overall Thickness
LVT thickness ranges from 2mm to 5mm for most products. Thinner LVT 2mm to 2.5mm is typically glue down format. It is flexible but does not conform to subfloor variations. In fact thin LVT telegraphs every imperfection. It requires a very smooth subfloor. Thinner LVT is suitable for commercial high traffic areas when glued down properly.
Medium thickness LVT 3mm to 4mm is available in click lock format. It provides a balance of flexibility and stability. It is the most common thickness for residential click lock LVT.
Thicker LVT 5mm is available in rigid core formats. Some thick LVT products have an attached pad for sound reduction. Thicker planks feel more solid underfoot and are easier to install on slightly uneven subfloors.
Wear Layer Thickness
The wear layer is the clear protective coating on top of the decorative film. It is measured in mil. One mil equals 0.001 inches or 0.0254 mm. The wear layer determines scratch resistance and how long the floor looks good.
6 mil wear layer is entry level for low traffic areas like bedrooms and closets. It shows scratches within 1 to 2 years in any room with regular foot traffic.
12 mil wear layer is standard residential grade. It handles normal household traffic including living rooms and hallways. With proper care it lasts 10 to 15 years.
20 mil wear layer is premium residential and minimum commercial grade. It resists scratches from pet claws and furniture movement. It lasts 15 to 20 years in a home and 5 to 8 years in commercial use.
28 to 40 mil wear layer is heavy commercial grade for retail stores and restaurants.
Matching Thickness to Wear Layer
A 2mm glue down LVT with 20 mil wear layer is a good commercial choice. The thin profile with thick wear layer provides durability without added height.
A 5mm click lock LVT with 12 mil wear layer is a standard residential choice. The thicker plank feels solid while the wear layer handles normal household traffic.
For high traffic residential areas like kitchens and entryways, choose at least 12 mil wear layer. For homes with pets or children, 20 mil is recommended.
