LVT vs SPC Flooring Which Is Better for Your Home

LVT and SPC are both waterproof vinyl flooring products but they have different characteristics. Choosing between them depends on where you are installing and what matters most to you. This guide helps you decide.

Core Material Difference

LVT has a flexible PVC core. The core contains plasticizers that keep the material flexible. This flexibility allows LVT to conform to slight subfloor unevenness better than SPC. LVT is typically thinner than SPC ranging from 2mm to 5mm thick.

SPC has a rigid stone plastic composite core made from limestone powder and PVC. The limestone content is typically 60 to 70 percent. This creates a dense structure that resists compression and denting. SPC is typically 4mm to 8mm thick.

Comfort Underfoot

LVT is softer and quieter underfoot. The flexible core absorbs some impact. This makes it more comfortable for standing or walking in bare feet. SPC feels warmer than LVT because the thicker core insulates better from the subfloor temperature.

SPC feels harder underfoot. The rigid core does not absorb impact.

Dent Resistance

SPC is more dent resistant than LVT. The dense limestone core resists compression from heavy furniture. Sofas refrigerators pianos and bed frames leave less mark on SPC.

LVT can dent more easily under heavy loads. The flexible PVC core compresses under constant weight. Furniture pads or coasters are recommended for LVT.

Installation

LVT is available in click lock, glue down, and loose lay formats. The flexible core allows glue down LVT to conform to subfloor variations better than SPC.

SPC is click lock only. The rigid core requires a flatter subfloor. Maximum flatness tolerance is 3mm over 2 meters for SPC. LVT is more forgiving of subfloor imperfections.

Where Each Is Best

Choose LVT for bedrooms and living rooms where comfort matters most. Choose LVT for glue down commercial applications. Choose LVT for projects where the subfloor is not perfectly flat.

Choose SPC for kitchens and entryways where heavy traffic and furniture are expected. Choose SPC for rooms with large windows where temperature fluctuations occur. Choose SPC for commercial spaces where dent resistance is critical.
