Laminate Flooring vs Vinyl vs SPC Which Is Better for Your Home

Three popular flooring options. All look similar at first glance. But they are very different products. Here is how they compare across the factors that matter most.

Waterproof Performance

Laminate: Not waterproof. Water resistant at best. HDF core swells when exposed to moisture. Cannot be installed in bathrooms or basements. Vinyl LVT: Waterproof. PVC core does not absorb water. Safe for bathrooms, kitchens, basements. SPC: Waterproof. Stone plastic composite core is the most moisture resistant. Best choice for moisture prone areas.

Winner: SPC and LVT. Laminate is not in the same category for waterproofing.

Durability

Laminate: AC3 rated handles normal residential use. Resists scratches well. Can chip at edges if hit hard. Prone to swelling at seams if moisture gets in. Vinyl LVT: Durable. Softer than laminate so it may dent from heavy furniture. Better scratch resistance than laminate in some products. SPC: Most durable of the three. Hard core resists dents and impacts. Best for high traffic areas.

Winner: SPC for overall durability. Laminate for scratch resistance. LVT for a balance of both.

Comfort Underfoot

Laminate: Warmer and quieter than SPC. Softer feel with good underlayment. Vinyl LVT: Quieter than SPC. More comfortable underfoot. Some products have attached pad for extra comfort. SPC: Hardest and coldest underfoot. Feels more like tile. Requires good underlayment for comfort.

Winner: Vinyl LVT for best comfort. Laminate is close second. SPC is the least comfortable.

Installation

Laminate: Click lock system. DIY friendly. Needs underlayment. Requires 8mm to 12mm expansion gap. Vinyl LVT: Click lock or glue down. Click lock is DIY friendly. Glue down requires professional installation. Needs smaller expansion gap 6mm to 8mm. SPC: Click lock system. Most DIY friendly. Some products have attached pad no underlayment needed. Needs 6mm to 8mm expansion gap.

Winner: SPC for easiest installation. Laminate and click lock LVT are also DIY friendly.

Cost

Laminate: 1.50 to 4.00 per square foot material. Most affordable option. Vinyl LVT: 2.00 to 5.00 per square foot. Mid range pricing. SPC: 2.50 to 6.00 per square foot. Pricier but most durable.

Winner: Laminate for lowest cost. LVT and SPC cost more but offer waterproof performance.

Which One Should You Choose

Choose laminate if: Budget is the primary concern. Installation is in dry areas only living rooms, bedrooms. You want a warm quiet floor. You are installing it yourself.

Choose vinyl LVT if: You need waterproof for bathrooms or kitchens. You want the most comfortable waterproof option. You prefer glue down installation for commercial projects.

Choose SPC if: You need maximum durability for high traffic areas. You are installing in basements or commercial spaces. You want the most dimensionally stable flooring. You need waterproof with the best dent resistance.
