Laminate Flooring vs Vinyl Which Is Better for Your Home

Laminate and vinyl are the two most popular budget friendly flooring options. They look similar but perform very differently. Here is the complete comparison.

Waterproof Performance

Laminate is not waterproof. The HDF core absorbs water and swells. Vinyl is waterproof. The PVC core does not absorb water. This is the biggest difference between these two products.

If you need flooring for a bathroom, kitchen, or basement, choose vinyl. If you are only installing in a dry living room or bedroom, laminate can work.

Durability

Laminate resists scratches better than vinyl. The aluminum oxide wear layer is harder than vinyl wear layer. Laminate is more resistant to pet scratches. Vinyl dents more easily than laminate. Heavy furniture can leave permanent dents in vinyl. Laminate is more resistant to impact. Dropped objects are less likely to damage laminate.

Cost

Laminate is generally more affordable than vinyl for comparable quality. Vinyl offers waterproof performance which justifies the price difference for wet areas. The right choice depends on your room conditions and performance requirements.

Comfort

Laminate is warmer and quieter underfoot. It feels more like real wood. Vinyl with attached pad is comfortable but thin vinyl without pad feels cold and hard. Laminate is better for bedrooms and living rooms where comfort matters.

Installation

Both use click lock systems that are DIY friendly. Laminate requires underlayment in all installations. Vinyl with attached pad does not need underlayment. Laminate needs a larger expansion gap of 8mm to 12mm. Vinyl needs 6mm to 8mm.

Maintenance

Both are easy to clean. Sweep and damp mop regularly. Laminate is more sensitive to moisture during cleaning. Do not wet mop laminate. Vinyl can handle damp mopping more frequently.

Which One to Choose

Choose laminate for living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways when budget is the priority. Choose vinyl for bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and any room where water may be present.
