My Dog Scratched My SPC Floor Can It Be Fixed 2026
If you have dogs, your SPC floor will get scratches. Some scratches are cosmetic and can be fixed. Others require replacing the plank. Here is how to tell the difference.
Surface Scratches vs Deep Scratches
Surface scratches only affect the top UV coating. They look like light hairline marks. They are visible when light hits them from a specific angle. These scratches are cosmetic only and do not affect the floor performance. They can be improved or masked.
Deep scratches go through the wear layer into the design layer. They are visible from any angle. They cannot be repaired. The only solution is to replace the plank.
How to Fix Surface Scratches
Clean the scratched area thoroughly. Make sure there is no dirt or debris in the scratch. Use a vinyl floor scratch repair kit available at most hardware stores. Apply the repair compound to the scratch following the kit instructions. Buff the area gently with a soft cloth. For light scratches, use a vinyl floor polish or restorative product. Apply a thin coat and buff. This fills the micro scratches and restores the shine.
Preventing Dog Scratches
Keep your dog nails trimmed short. Long nails cause the most damage. Use nail caps for dogs that are hard on floors. Place runner rugs or carpet runners in high traffic areas where your dog walks most. Use area rugs near entry doors where dogs enter and exit. Keep your floor clean. Grit and small particles on the floor act like sandpaper when your dog runs across it.
When to Replace the Plank
If the scratch has gone through the wear layer and the design layer is visible, the plank needs replacement. If you have spare planks from your original order, you can replace the damaged plank. If you have spare planks but need instructions, see our article on replacing individual SPC planks.
