How to Protect SPC Flooring During Home Renovation Construction

Home renovations create dust, debris, and potential damage to finished flooring. If you already have SPC flooring installed, protecting it during construction work is essential. This guide covers protection methods.

Cover the Floor

Use ram board or heavy duty cardboard to cover the entire floor area. Ram board is a thick paper product designed for construction protection. It is available at hardware stores and home improvement centers.

Tape the seams of the ram board with duct tape. Do not use masking tape or painter tape that can leave adhesive residue. Use tape designed for floor protection.

Protection in Heavy Traffic Areas

In areas where workers walk frequently or equipment is moved, use plywood sheets over the ram board. The plywood distributes weight and prevents the ram board from wearing through.

Cut plywood into 4x8 foot sections for easy handling. Tape the plywood sections together to prevent shifting.

Dust Protection

Construction dust is abrasive. It can scratch the SPC surface when walked on. Seal doorways with plastic sheeting and tape to contain dust to the work area.

Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter for cleanup. Do not sweep dust across the SPC floor. Sweeping pushes abrasive particles across the surface and causes micro scratches.

Tool and Equipment Safety

Do not place heavy tools directly on the SPC floor. Use a drop cloth or plywood sheet under tool stands and equipment. Dropping tools can dent or crack the SPC planks.

Ladders should have rubber feet that do not slide. Place a plywood sheet under any ladder that will be used for extended periods.

Cleanup After Construction

Remove debris by hand first. Pick up nails, screws, and sharp objects before vacuuming. Vacuum the floor thoroughly with a HEPA filter vacuum.

Mop the floor with a manufacturer recommended cleaner to remove fine dust. Change mop water frequently. Dirty water leaves a residue that dulls the finish.

About PROLEADER recommends protecting SPC flooring during any renovation work. The cost of protection materials is small compared to the cost of replacing damaged planks.
