Rigid Core Vinyl vs Flexible Vinyl: What Is the Difference 2023
In the US market the terms SPC flooring and LVP flooring are often used interchangeably. Technically SPC which stands for Stone Plastic Composite is a type of LVP which stands for Luxury Vinyl Plank. The real difference is between rigid core vinyl and flexible vinyl. This guide explains the difference clearly.
What Is Rigid Core Vinyl SPC
This is what most people call SPC flooring. It has a rigid core made from limestone powder and PVC. It is 100 percent waterproof and dimensionally stable. It does not expand or contract with temperature changes. SPC uses click-lock installation only. Total thickness ranges from 4mm to 8mm. Rigid core is best for commercial spaces basements and rooms with large windows or temperature fluctuations.
What Is Flexible Vinyl Traditional LVP
This is the original luxury vinyl plank with a flexible PVC core. It is also 100 percent waterproof. Total thickness ranges from 3mm to 6mm. It can be installed as a floating floor with click-lock or glued down. Flexible vinyl is more comfortable underfoot and quieter than rigid core. It is also more affordable. Best for bedrooms and residential living areas.
Key Differences
Waterproof Performance
Both rigid core and flexible vinyl are 100 percent waterproof. Both are suitable for kitchens bathrooms and basements.
Durability and Stability
Rigid core SPC is more durable. The stone composite core resists impacts and dents better. Rigid core is also more dimensionally stable and will not expand or contract with temperature changes. Flexible vinyl can expand and contract which means larger rooms may need expansion gaps or T-moldings every 30 to 40 feet.
Comfort Underfoot
Flexible vinyl is more comfortable. It is softer warmer and quieter to walk on. Rigid core SPC is harder and can feel cold without a good underlayment. For bedrooms and living areas flexible vinyl is more comfortable. For commercial spaces rigid core durability matters more.
Installation
Rigid core SPC is easier to install. The rigid planks do not flex and are easier to align. Flexible vinyl requires more care because the planks can bend during installation. Rigid core is also more forgiving on slightly uneven subfloors.
Price
Flexible vinyl LVP is generally more affordable than rigid core SPC. The stone composite core material in SPC adds cost. The price gap narrows when comparing similar wear layer thickness.
Which One Should You Choose
Choose rigid core SPC if you need maximum durability for commercial spaces have large rooms with temperature changes or want the most dimensionally stable option.
Choose flexible vinyl LVP if comfort underfoot is important you are on a tighter budget or you prefer a softer quieter floor for bedrooms.
