SPC Flooring Around Fireplaces What You Need to Know

SPC flooring is a popular choice for living rooms and family rooms. Many of these rooms have fireplaces. If you are planning to install SPC near a fireplace, here is what you need to know about heat tolerance and safety.

How SPC Handles Heat

SPC has a maximum surface temperature tolerance of about 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The PVC content in SPC softens when exposed to sustained heat above this level. Near a fireplace, the floor surface temperature can exceed this threshold, especially close to the firebox.

Typical clearance recommendations for SPC near fireplaces are:

- Gas fireplace with glass front: maintain at least 12 to 18 inches from the glass

- Wood burning stove: maintain 18 to 36 inches from the stove

- Electric fireplace: maintain 6 to 12 inches from the unit

A hearth pad made of stone, tile, or metal provides heat protection. The pad distributes heat and keeps the SPC below its temperature limit.

When SPC Is Not Enough

Some fireplace installations require higher fire resistance than SPC can provide. This is common in commercial spaces, rental properties, or homes with strict building codes. In these cases, a hearth pad alone may not be sufficient.

For projects that need A class fire rated flooring, SWF is the right product. SWF is rated A class for fire resistance. It can be installed closer to heat sources without the same risk of softening or damage. SWF also handles embers better than SPC because the surface does not melt on contact.

SPC is suitable for most residential fireplace installations with proper clearance and hearth protection. For commercial projects, rental properties, or any installation where fire rating is required, SWF provides the necessary fire resistance while maintaining waterproof performance.
