SPC Flooring Buckling Causes and How to Fix 2024
Floor buckling is one of the most common problems reported with SPC flooring. The floor rises in the middle of the room creating an uneven surface. This guide explains why it happens and how to fix it.
What Is Floor Buckling
Buckling happens when the SPC flooring has no room to expand. The planks push against each other and lift up in the center of the room. This creates a visible wave or bump in the floor surface. Buckling can happen soon after installation or months later when seasons change.
Root Cause
The most common cause is insufficient expansion gap around the perimeter of the room. SPC flooring expands and contracts with temperature changes. Without enough space at the edges the pressure builds up and the floor buckles. Another cause is heavy fixed furniture that restricts normal expansion. Large wardrobes or kitchen islands can trap the flooring and prevent it from moving.
How to Fix Buckled SPC Flooring
First identify the area where buckling is occurring. Remove the baseboard or quarter round along the wall closest to the buckled area. Check if there is an expansion gap of at least 8 to 10mm. If the gap is too small remove the planks near the wall and trim them to create proper space. For severe buckling the affected planks may need to be removed and reinstalled.
Prevention Always leave at least 8 to 10mm expansion gap around all walls. Leave expansion space around all fixed objects including pipes and columns. Keep room temperature stable between 18 and 27 degrees Celsius. Allow the flooring to acclimate for 24 to 48 hours before installation.
