What Is SPC Flooring Core Density and Why It Matters for Durability
SPC flooring gets its strength from the core. The core density determines how durable the floor is. But not all SPC cores are the same. This guide explains what core density means and why it matters for your purchase.
What Is Core Density
Core density is the weight of the core material per unit volume. Higher density means more material packed into the same space. In SPC flooring, density is measured in grams per cubic centimeter or kilograms per cubic meter.
A standard SPC core has a density of 1.8 to 2.2 grams per cubic centimeter. Compare this to water at 1.0, solid PVC at 1.4, or limestone at 2.7. The SPC core density falls between PVC and pure limestone.
The density is determined by the ratio of calcium carbonate to PVC resin. Calcium carbonate is denser than PVC. More calcium carbonate means higher density but also more brittleness. More PVC means lower density but more flexibility.
The Right Ratio
The quality of SPC depends on getting the ratio right. Too much calcium carbonate makes the core brittle. The planks chip at the edges. The locking mechanism breaks during installation. The floor sounds hollow when walked on.
Too much PVC makes the core too flexible. The planks bend under weight. Indentations form easily. The floor does not feel solid underfoot.
A quality SPC core has approximately 60 to 70 percent calcium carbonate and 30 to 40 percent PVC resin. Additives like stabilizers and processing aids make up the remaining few percent.
How Density Affects Performance
Higher density SPC offers:
- Better indentation resistance: heavy furniture leaves fewer marks
- Better dimensional stability: less expansion with temperature changes
- Better sound performance: denser core transmits less impact sound
- Better edge strength: less chipping during installation
Lower density SPC offers:
- More flexibility: easier to install on slightly uneven subfloors
- Lighter weight: easier to transport and handle
- Lower cost: less material cost per square meter
The tradeoff is between durability and flexibility. For most residential applications, a mid range density is sufficient. For commercial applications, higher density is preferred.
How to Check Core Density
You can estimate core density without special equipment:
1. Weigh a sample plank
2. Measure the dimensions (length, width, thickness)
3. Calculate volume: length x width x thickness
4. Calculate density: weight divided by volume
A 5mm thick SPC plank should weigh approximately 8 to 10 kg per square meter. If the weight is significantly lower, the density is low.
The Cut Test
Cut a small piece from the sample edge. Examine the cut surface:
- A quality core has a smooth, consistent appearance
- A low quality core shows visible air pockets or uneven texture
- The cut edge should be clean without crumbling
Press a fingernail into the cut edge. A quality core resists indentation. A low quality core shows a visible mark.
Why Density Varies Between Products
Different products are designed for different uses. Thin click lock SPC for residential use has lower density to keep weight manageable. Thick commercial SPC has higher density for durability.
The same factory may produce multiple grades with different densities. A budget product line has lower density. A premium product line has higher density. The price difference reflects the material cost.
