SPC Flooring Noise Complaints in Apartments Sound Reduction Guide 2026
SPC flooring can be noisier than carpet in multi story buildings. Footsteps, dropped objects, and even the sound of walking can transmit to the unit below. If you are installing SPC in an apartment or condominium, noise reduction is important.
Where the Noise Comes From
Impact noise is the sound of footsteps and objects dropping. This travels through the floor structure to the unit below. Airborne noise is sound traveling through the air like conversation or TV. SPC does not significantly affect airborne noise. The main concern is impact noise. SPC is a hard surface. Footsteps on hard surfaces create more impact noise than carpet.
Building Codes and Noise Requirements
Many apartment buildings and condominiums have minimum sound transmission requirements. The IIC Impact Insulation Class rating measures how well a floor assembly reduces impact noise. Minimum IIC ratings are typically 50 to 55 depending on local building codes. Carpet naturally achieves high IIC ratings. Hard surfaces like SPC need specific underlayment to meet the requirements.
Underlayment for Sound Reduction
Standard EPE underlayment provides minimal sound reduction. It is not sufficient for apartment installations where noise is a concern. Acoustic underlayment is specifically designed for sound reduction. It is thicker and denser than standard underlayment. Acoustic underlayment can improve IIC ratings by 10 to 20 points.
Some SPC products with attached IXPE pad provide better sound reduction than SPC without pad. But even attached pad may not meet strict apartment requirements. If sound is a concern, choose the best acoustic underlayment available. Confirm with the building management what IIC rating is required before purchasing flooring.
Other Noise Reduction Tips
Install area rugs in high traffic areas and living rooms. Rugs absorb impact noise significantly. Use furniture pads under all furniture legs. Furniture scraping on SPC creates noise that transmits through the floor. Seal gaps at walls and baseboards. Sound can travel through gaps. Install a thick rug runner in hallways where footsteps are frequent.
Construction Considerations
The concrete slab thickness affects sound transmission. Thicker slabs transmit less noise. The building structure matters. Wood frame buildings transmit more impact noise than concrete buildings. Older buildings may have lower sound insulation between floors.
