SPC Flooring Warranty What Is Covered and What Is Not

SPC flooring warranties give buyers confidence. But the warranty terms vary significantly between manufacturers. Understanding what is covered and what is not helps you make an informed purchase decision.

Structural Warranty

The structural warranty covers defects in the core material. This includes cracking, delamination, or manufacturing defects in the SPC core. Most manufacturers offer a lifetime structural warranty for residential use.

Structural warranty typically covers:

- Core cracking or separation not caused by impact

- Delamination between layers

- Manufacturing defects in the locking mechanism

- Excessive cupping or crowning from production issues

Structural warranty does not cover:

- Damage from improper installation

- Damage from subfloor failure

- Damage from flooding or excessive moisture

- Damage from heavy impact or dropped objects

Finish Warranty

The finish warranty covers the wear layer and surface finish. This includes wear through, staining, and fading under normal use.

Residential finish warranties range from 10 years to lifetime depending on the product. Commercial finish warranties are shorter, typically 5 to 10 years.

Finish warranty covers:

- Wear through of the decorative layer under normal foot traffic

- Permanent staining that cannot be cleaned

- Fading beyond acceptable color variation limits

Finish warranty does not cover:

- Scratches from pets, furniture, or debris

- Damage from improper cleaning methods

- Damage from steam mops or harsh chemicals

- Color change from direct sunlight exposure

Commercial Warranty Limitations

Commercial warranties are different from residential. The warranty period is shorter. The coverage is more limited. Commercial use is defined as spaces open to the public or used for business.

Common commercial warranty exclusions:

- Rolling loads from shopping carts, pallet jacks, or wheelchairs

- High heel damage in retail spaces

- Damage from food or beverage spills in restaurants

- Damage from cleaning equipment in commercial settings

Check the commercial warranty terms carefully. Some manufacturers limit commercial coverage to specific products with thicker wear layers.

Warranty Claim Process

Filing a warranty claim requires documentation. Keep the following records:

- Original purchase receipt showing product and quantity

- Product batch number and production date

- Installation records including who installed and when

- Photos of the defect showing the issue clearly

- Maintenance records showing proper care

Most manufacturers require the claim to be filed through the original retailer or distributor. Direct claims from end users are often rejected.

Common Reasons for Claim Denial

Warranty claims are denied for these common reasons:

1. No proof of purchase showing product was from an authorized seller

2. Damage from moisture not covered by the warranty

3. Damage from improper installation such as no expansion gap

4. Damage from improper maintenance such as steam mopping

5. Natural wear and tear beyond the warranty period

Transferability

Some SPC flooring warranties are transferable to a new homeowner within the warranty period. Transferability adds resale value to the home. Check the terms for transfer fees or restrictions.

Transferable warranties typically require registration within 30 to 90 days of purchase. Non transferable warranties end when the original owner sells the property.
