SPC Flooring in a Vacation Home What to Know Before Installing 2026

Vacation homes have different conditions than primary residences. The temperature may be left unregulated for weeks or months. This affects SPC flooring differently than a constantly climate controlled home.

Temperature Extremes

SPC flooring performs best between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius. Vacation homes that are left unheated in winter can drop below freezing. SPC becomes more brittle at low temperatures. The locking system may become stressed and crack. Flooring left in extreme heat without air conditioning can soften and expand. Plan ahead if your vacation home will have temperature swings.

Acclimation Is Critical

SPC planks need to acclimate to the installation environment before installation. For a vacation home, the acclimation period should be longer because the temperature may not be as stable. Keep planks in the room for at least 72 hours before installation. If the temperature during acclimation is significantly different from the temperature during occupation, the planks will expand or contract after installation.

What to Consider

If the property is heated during winter, SPC will perform normally. If the property is not heated, ask the factory if their SPC is rated for unheated spaces. Some SPC formulations handle cold better than others. Install the flooring before the cold season if possible. Installing in warm conditions gives the planks a better start. Consider leaving the heat on at a low setting 10 degrees Celsius during winter to protect the flooring. This is also good for the plumbing and building structure.

Moisture in Seasonal Properties

Vacation homes can have higher humidity because they are not ventilated regularly. High humidity for extended periods can affect the subfloor and underlayment. This can cause issues that appear as flooring problems. Install a vapor barrier if the vacation home is on a concrete slab. Proper subfloor preparation is more important for seasonal properties.
