SPC Flooring vs Ceramic Tile for Kitchen Which Is Better

Kitchen flooring needs to handle spills, dropped items, and heavy foot traffic. SPC and ceramic tile are both popular choices. But they suit different kitchen styles and usage patterns. Here is how they compare.

Waterproof Performance

Both SPC and ceramic tile are waterproof. SPC has a rigid PVC core that does not absorb water. Tile is fired clay that is naturally waterproof.

The weak point for both is the joints. For SPC, water can seep through the click lock joints if standing water is left for long periods. For tile, the grout lines can absorb water and stain if not sealed.

For a kitchen where spills happen daily, tile with sealed grout is the safer choice. For a kitchen where spills are wiped quickly, SPC performs well.

Durability

Ceramic tile lasts longer than SPC. Tile can last 50 years or more. SPC lasts 15 to 25 years depending on quality.

Tile is harder and more scratch resistant. Dropped knives or pans are less likely to scratch tile. But tile can chip or crack if a heavy object is dropped on it. Replacing a chipped tile is more difficult than replacing an SPC plank.

SPC is more forgiving. Dropped items are less likely to break on SPC than on tile. But sharp objects can scratch the SPC surface.

Comfort

SPC is warmer and softer underfoot than tile. If you spend long hours standing at the kitchen counter, SPC is more comfortable. Tile is cold, especially in winter. Standing on tile for extended periods is tiring.

Installation

SPC installation is faster. A kitchen floor can be installed in one day. The room can be used immediately.

Tile installation takes longer. The subfloor needs preparation. Tile needs to be laid and grouted. The grout needs 24 to 48 hours to cure. The kitchen is out of use for several days.

Maintenance

SPC is easy to maintain. Sweep and damp mop. No sealing required. But standing water should be wiped quickly to prevent joint issues.

Tile requires grout maintenance. Grout needs sealing initially and resealing every 12 to 18 months. Grout lines collect dirt and require more effort to clean.

Which Is Better for Kitchen

For a kitchen where you stand for long periods and want a warmer, faster install, choose SPC. For a kitchen that needs to last for decades with maximum scratch and water resistance, choose tile.

If you have young children and expect frequent spills, tile with sealed grout is more forgiving. If you want a quick kitchen renovation on a moderate budget, SPC is the practical choice.
