Waterproof Flooring That Does Not Warp in Sunlight or Heat
Sunlight and heat cause many waterproof flooring products to warp. The floor near a window can develop a visible cup shape within months of installation. This is a common problem that manufacturers do not always mention. This article explains why it happens and which product resists it.
Why SPC Warps in Sunlight
SPC contains PVC plastic. PVC softens as temperature increases. The floor near a window gets hotter than the floor in the shade. The hotter area expands more than the cooler area. The plank develops a cup shape with raised edges.
Over time, repeated heating and cooling cycles make the warp permanent. The plank no longer lays flat. The only solution is replacement.
Why Vinyl LVT Warps in Heat
LVT is also PVC based. The same softening occurs. Thin glue down LVT can develop bubbles or edge curl near windows. The adhesive softens and the plank lifts.
What Does Not Warp
MFB uses a mineral fiber core with no PVC content. Minerals do not soften in heat. The core maintains its flatness across the entire temperature range.
In direct sunlight, an MFB floor stays flat. Near a south facing window, the planks remain level. In a sunroom with glass walls and ceiling, MFB does not warp.
The mineral core also conducts heat differently than PVC. Heat transfers through the core without causing dimensional change.
For rooms with large windows, glass doors, skylights, or sun exposure, MFB is the most reliable waterproof flooring choice.
