Does Waterproof Laminate Meet Fire Code for Commercial Buildings

Commercial building codes require specific fire ratings for flooring materials. The requirements vary by building type, occupancy, and location within the building.

Waterproof laminate typically has a Class 1 or Class A fire rating when tested under ASTM E648 or NFPA 253. This meets the requirement for most commercial spaces including offices, retail stores, and schools.

However, some commercial environments require higher fire protection.

Where Standard Waterproof Laminate May Not Be Enough

Healthcare facilities. Hospitals and clinics often require additional fire safety certifications. The flooring must meet strict smoke density and flame spread requirements.

Commercial kitchens. The combination of heat, grease, and open flames requires flooring with higher fire resistance. Standard waterproof laminate may not meet the code for kitchen areas.

Exit corridors and stairwells. Some building codes require higher fire ratings for egress paths.

Schools and public buildings. Certain states and municipalities have additional fire code requirements beyond the standard ASTM rating.

SWF Flooring for Higher Fire Ratings

SWF flooring is engineered for applications that need A level fireproof certification. The core material is non combustible and does not support flame spread.

SWF achieves A level fire rating, the highest classification. It is certified for use in healthcare, schools, commercial kitchens, and other fire sensitive environments.

SWF is also fully waterproof. The mineral based core does not absorb moisture. The product handles both fire code and moisture requirements in one flooring solution.

When to Specify SWF

Specify SWF flooring when the project requires both waterproof performance and A level fire rating. Common applications include hospital operating rooms, commercial kitchen prep areas, school science labs, and senior living facility corridors.

When Waterproof Laminate Is Acceptable

Standard waterproof laminate with Class A rating is acceptable for general commercial use: office areas, retail showrooms, hotel guest rooms, and school classrooms not requiring higher fire ratings.
