Waterproof Laminate vs Luxury Vinyl Plank Which Is Right for Your Home

Waterproof laminate and luxury vinyl plank are two popular flooring options that both claim to handle moisture. They compete in similar price ranges and both offer wood like appearance. But they are fundamentally different products. Here is how to choose between them.

Core Material Difference

This is the most important distinction. Waterproof laminate has a high density fiberboard core with water resistant treatment. Luxury vinyl plank has a PVC core that is naturally waterproof. The core material determines how the product behaves with moisture, temperature changes, and heavy furniture.

The laminate core, even with waterproof treatment, remains wood based. It expands and contracts with humidity changes. The vinyl core does not absorb moisture and does not change size with humidity.

Appearance and Feel

Waterproof laminate has a more realistic wood grain texture because manufacturers can press deep grain patterns into the surface. The embossing matches the print layer. This gives laminate a more authentic wood look at a lower price.

LVP has a slightly more synthetic feel on the surface. Better quality LVP has registered embossing that aligns grain texture with the print. But the depth of texture is generally shallower than laminate.

Underfoot, laminate generally feels more natural. The wood fiber core gives it a solid feel closer to real hardwood. Laminate also dampens footstep noise better than LVP because the HDF core absorbs sound. LVP has a more synthetic plastic feel underfoot.

Cost Comparison

Waterproof laminate is generally more expensive than LVP. Entry level waterproof laminate costs more than entry level LVP. Premium waterproof laminate with 3 to 5 percent swell rate and advanced embossing can cost significantly more than premium LVP. The deciding factor is usually the room conditions rather than price.

Durability and Maintenance

Both products are durable for residential use. Laminate has a clear advantage in scratch resistance. The surface uses aluminum oxide particles in the wear layer, the same material used in sandpaper. This makes laminate highly resistant to scratches from pets, furniture movement, and daily wear. LVP uses a PVC based wear layer that is softer and more prone to scratching. For homes with pets or children, laminate with AC4 or higher rating is the better choice for scratch resistance.

Both products are easy to clean. Sweep or vacuum regularly and mop with a damp cloth. Neither product should be steam mopped. Steam can damage the locking mechanism of both products.

Best Room Recommendations

Choose waterproof laminate for:

- Living rooms and bedrooms

- Home offices and studies

- Hallways with moderate traffic

- Rooms where budget is tight and spills are rare

Choose luxury vinyl plank for:

- Living rooms and bedrooms

- Home offices and studies

- Entryways and mudrooms

- Homes with pets and children

- Commercial spaces with heavy traffic

The Bottom Line

For above grade rooms with occasional spills, waterproof laminate offers good value and better appearance. For ground contact areas with concrete slabs, MFB flooring provides better moisture protection because the mineral fiber core does not absorb water at all. For bathrooms, tile or MFB flooring is the most reliable choice.
