Can Waterproof Laminate Be Used in Commercial Kitchens What to Know

Commercial kitchens are one of the most demanding environments for flooring. Water, grease, heat, heavy equipment, and constant cleaning create conditions that destroy most flooring products quickly.

Waterproof laminate is sometimes considered for commercial kitchens because it costs less than tile or specialty flooring. But is it suitable?

Why Waterproof Laminate Struggles in Commercial Kitchens

The core limitation is the HDF core. Even with waterproof treatment, the core contains wood fibers. Commercial kitchens have standing water from cleaning, leaks from equipment, and high humidity from cooking and dishwashing. These conditions expose the core to moisture continuously.

The locking joints are another weak point. Commercial kitchens are wet cleaned daily. Water seeps through the joints into the core. Over time, the edges swell and the surface wears unevenly.

Heat from kitchen equipment also affects the core. Hot spills, steam from dishwashers, and radiant heat from cooking lines can cause the core to expand. The locking system may gap or buckle.

Wear layer limitations. Waterproof laminate typically has a 6 to 12 mil wear layer. Commercial kitchens need at least 20 mil for durability. The surface wears through faster in high traffic kitchen areas.

Better Options for Commercial Kitchens

For commercial kitchens, look for flooring with inert core materials that do not absorb moisture:

MFB flooring uses a mineral fiber core that does not absorb water. The surface has aluminum oxide finish for scratch resistance. It handles heat, moisture, and heavy traffic better than waterproof laminate.

Tile is the traditional choice. Grout requires maintenance and sealing but the tile itself is waterproof.

SWF flooring offers A level fire rating plus waterproof performance for kitchens that require fire rated flooring.
