What Causes SPC Flooring to Have a Chemical Smell and How to Fix It
New SPC flooring can have a noticeable chemical smell when first installed. This is normal for most vinyl products. The smell comes from the manufacturing process and new materials. This guide explains the causes and solutions.
Sources of the Smell
The smell in new SPC flooring comes from several sources:
1. PVC resin and plasticizers: these materials have a characteristic odor when new
2. Printing inks: the decorative layer uses inks that release volatile organic compounds
3. UV coating: the surface coating can have a smell as it cures
4. Packaging materials: cartons and wrapping materials contribute to the initial smell
These odors are strongest when the flooring is first removed from the packaging. They fade significantly within the first week after installation.
Is It Harmful
Most SPC flooring is low VOC and safe for indoor use. Quality SPC products meet indoor air quality standards. The smell is more of a nuisance than a health concern.
If the smell is very strong or causes physical discomfort, check the product certification. Look for FloorScore or GREENGUARD certification. These indicate the product has been tested for indoor air quality.
How to Reduce the Smell
Ventilation: open windows and doors for the first week after installation. Use fans to circulate air. Fresh air accelerates the off gassing process.
Time: the smell naturally fades within the first 1 to 3 weeks. Plan to keep the room well ventilated during this period.
Cleaning: damp mop the floor with water and mild cleaner after installation. This removes surface residue that contributes to the smell.
Air purification: use an air purifier with a carbon filter. Carbon filters absorb VOCs and reduce odor.
When the Smell Indicates a Problem
A strong persistent smell after 4 weeks may indicate a quality problem. Possible causes include:
- Low quality PVC resin with high volatile content
- Insufficient curing time at the factory
- Moisture trapped between the flooring and subfloor
- Mold or mildew growth under the floor
If the smell persists beyond 4 weeks with good ventilation, contact the manufacturer or your supplier.
