What Damages SPC Flooring Heat and Moisture Risks
SPC flooring is durable but not indestructible. Three environmental factors cause most SPC damage: heat, moisture, and UV exposure. Understanding these risks helps you prevent problems before they start.
Heat Damage
SPC contains PVC, which is a plastic. Plastics soften when hot. When the floor surface temperature exceeds 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the planks become pliable.
The most common heat damage pattern is edge warping near windows or sliding glass doors. The planks closest to the glass receive the most heat and soften first. Foot traffic or furniture on the softened area pushes the plank edge up.
Heat damage is permanent. Once the plank edge has warped, it does not return to flat when the temperature drops. The plank must be replaced.
Prevention: Use window treatments to reduce direct sunlight on the floor. Keep the room temperature consistent. For rooms where temperature control is difficult, consider MFB which does not soften in heat.
Moisture Damage
SPC core is waterproof. The plank itself does not absorb water. But the subfloor moisture issue is different.
Concrete slabs release moisture vapor continuously. Even dry looking concrete produces enough vapor to affect flooring over time. The vapor gets trapped between the slab and the SPC. Over months and years, the pressure causes the plank edges to curl upward.
This is often misdiagnosed as a product defect. The planks look warped but the problem is the subfloor, not the floor.
Prevention: Use a vapor barrier underlayment on all concrete subfloors. Test the concrete moisture before installation. For basements and slabs on grade, the barrier is essential.
UV Damage
SPC surface layers can discolor from prolonged direct sunlight. The UV radiation breaks down the print layer and the wear layer over time. The discoloration is usually yellowing or fading.
UV damage is slow. It takes years to become noticeable. Once it happens, it is irreversible. The affected planks need replacement.
Prevention: Use UV blocking window film on large windows. Area rugs protect the floor beneath them but cause uneven fading when moved. Choose lighter colors that absorb less UV energy.
