What Flooring Has A Class Fire Rating

Fire ratings matter for commercial buildings, multi family housing, and some residential projects. Building codes specify the minimum fire rating for flooring based on the building type and occupancy. A class fire rating is the highest standard. Here is which flooring products meet it and which do not.

What A Class Fire Rating Means

Flooring fire ratings are measured by flame spread and smoke development. A class rated flooring has a flame spread index of 25 or less and a smoke development index of 450 or less. This is the most stringent residential and commercial rating.

Class A rated flooring does not catch fire easily. If it does catch fire, the flame does not spread quickly across the surface. The smoke produced is within acceptable limits for building safety.

Which Flooring Products Meet A Class

Tile and stone are naturally A class fire rated. They do not burn. They are the traditional choice for buildings with strict fire code requirements.

Sheet vinyl and LVT can achieve A class rating with specific formulations. Not all LVT products meet the standard. Check the product specification before specifying for a fire rated project.

SPC flooring typically does not meet A class fire rating. The PVC content can burn and produce smoke. Some SPC products achieve a lower Class 1 or Class 2 rating but not A class.

Laminate flooring rarely meets A class fire rating. The HDF core and decorative layer are combustible. Laminate is Class 2 or Class 3 in most formulations.

Carpet can achieve A class rating with specific treatments and low pile construction but requires additional testing and certification.

SWF Flooring A Class and Waterproof

SWF flooring is A class fire rated. It meets the flame spread and smoke development requirements for the highest rating. This is verified by independent testing.

SWF is also waterproof. The core handles moisture without swelling or damage. This combination of A class fire rating and waterproof performance is rare among click lock flooring products.

Most fire rated flooring options are tile, stone, or sheet vinyl. These products have limitations in comfort, installation, or moisture resistance. SWF provides click lock installation with the same fire rating as tile.

Where A Class Fire Rated Flooring Is Required

Building codes typically require A class fire rated flooring in:

- Healthcare facilities including hospitals and clinics

- Schools and educational buildings

- Hotel corridors and public areas

- Senior living and care facilities

- Multi family building common areas

- Commercial kitchens

- Exit corridors in any commercial building

For residential single family homes, A class rating is generally not required by code. But some homeowners choose it for added safety.
