What Is LVT Flooring Complete Guide Structure and Benefits 2025
LVT stands for Luxury Vinyl Tile or Luxury Vinyl Plank. It is a multi layer vinyl flooring product that has become one of the most popular flooring choices in the US market. Many people use the term LVT to refer to any premium vinyl flooring. This guide explains exactly what LVT is and what makes it different from other options.
What Is LVT Flooring Made Of
LVT is a multi layer product. Each layer serves a specific purpose. The top layer is a UV coating that protects against scratches and fading from sunlight. Below that is the wear layer which determines how long the floor lasts. A 20mil wear layer is about 0.5mm thick and is standard for residential use. Under the wear layer is the decorative film. This is a high resolution printed image that gives LVT its realistic wood or stone appearance. The core layer is made from PVC and other materials. In traditional LVT the core is flexible. In rigid core LVT also called SPC the core is made with limestone powder for extra stability. The bottom layer is the backing which adds stability and can include an attached underlayment.
How LVT Is Made
LVT is manufactured using a process called rotogravure printing or digital printing. A design is printed onto a film layer. The printed film is laminated onto a vinyl core using heat and pressure. The wear layer and UV coating are added in the same process. The material is then cut into planks or tiles at precise dimensions. The edges are profiled to create the locking system for click installation or left flat for glue down installation.
Types of LVT
LVT comes in two main forms based on the core type. Flexible LVT has a PVC core that bends and flexes. It is softer quieter and more affordable. It requires a very flat subfloor for best results. Rigid core LVT also known as SPC or WPC has a stiffer core. It is more durable and dimensionally stable. It can handle slightly uneven subfloors better.
LVT also comes in different formats. Plank format looks like wood flooring and is the most popular. Tile format looks like ceramic or stone tile and is used in bathrooms and kitchens. Sheet vinyl is different from LVT. Sheet vinyl comes in large rolls and has fewer seams. LVT comes in individual planks or tiles.
Key Benefits of LVT Flooring
LVT is 100 percent waterproof. It will not swell or warp when exposed to water. This makes it suitable for kitchens bathrooms basements and laundry rooms. LVT is durable. A quality LVT with a 20mil wear layer lasts 10 to 15 years in residential use. LVT is comfortable underfoot. It is warmer and quieter than tile or stone. LVT is easy to install. Most LVT uses click lock installation that is DIY friendly. LVT is low maintenance. Regular sweeping and occasional damp mopping is all it needs.
Where LVT Is Commonly Used
LVT is used in almost every room in a home. Kitchens and bathrooms are the most common applications because waterproof performance matters most. Basements are another popular application especially when installed over concrete. Living rooms and bedrooms use LVT for its realistic wood look and comfort. Commercial spaces like retail stores offices and hotels also use LVT for its durability and easy maintenance.
