What Is LVT Flooring Structure Layers Types and Benefits
LVT stands for Luxury Vinyl Tile or Luxury Vinyl Plank. It is one of the most popular flooring choices in the US market. LVT offers the look of natural materials with the durability and waterproof performance of vinyl. This guide explains what LVT is and how it differs from SPC and laminate.
What Is LVT Flooring Made Of
LVT is a multi layer vinyl product. From top to bottom the layers are: UV coating that protects against scratches and yellowing from sunlight, wear layer that determines lifespan typically 12 to 20 mil for residential, decorative film with high resolution wood or stone print, PVC core made from flexible vinyl, and backing layer that ensures dimensional stability.
The core is the main difference between LVT and SPC. LVT has a flexible PVC core with plasticizers that keep it flexible. SPC has a rigid stone plastic composite core.
Extruded vs Hot Pressed LVT
There are two manufacturing methods for LVT. Extruded LVT is produced by continuous extrusion through a heated die. The layers are fused together in one continuous process. Extruded LVT offers better dimensional stability, more consistent thickness, higher production efficiency, and lower manufacturing cost. It is suitable for large volume production and is the mainstream choice for most projects.
Hot pressed LVT is produced by stacking the layers and pressing them together under heat. Hot pressed LVT has stronger layer bonding and clearer embossing definition, making it suitable for premium decorative designs. However it has higher production cost, lower efficiency, and greater thickness variation risk.
For most residential and commercial flooring projects, extruded LVT provides better consistency, competitive pricing, and reliable performance.
Types of LVT by Installation
Click lock LVT has a locking system on the edges. Planks click together without glue for a floating floor installation. Click lock is DIY friendly and can be installed over existing flooring in some cases. It requires an expansion gap around the perimeter.
Glue down LVT is applied directly to the subfloor with adhesive. It is thinner typically 2mm to 3mm. Glue down LVT is more stable for commercial applications and rooms with heavy rolling loads. Professional installation is required.
Loose lay LVT uses friction to hold planks in place. This is less common than click lock or glue down.
Where LVT Works Best
LVT is suitable for most dry areas in a home such as living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways. It is also used in commercial spaces like retail stores, offices, and restaurants. For wet areas such as kitchens, basements, and laundry rooms, consider the moisture exposure carefully. LVT is waterproof at the material level but water can enter through the seams.
