What Is the Best Underlayment for SPC Flooring 2023

Underlayment is the layer between your SPC flooring and the subfloor. It affects comfort noise levels and moisture protection. Some SPC flooring comes with attached underlayment and some requires separate underlayment. This guide helps you choose the right option.

Do You Need Underlayment for SPC Flooring

Some SPC products have an attached underlayment pad. If yours does you do not need extra underlayment unless you need extra sound reduction or moisture protection. If your SPC does not have attached underlayment you should install a separate underlayment. It protects the flooring and improves the feel underfoot.

Types of Underlayment for SPC Flooring

Foam underlayment is the most common and affordable option. It provides basic cushioning and sound reduction. Thickness ranges from 1mm to 3mm. Suitable for most residential applications over wood subfloors.

Combination underlayment with vapor barrier has a plastic film layer that blocks moisture from the subfloor. Essential for concrete subfloors in basements and ground level installations. This is the most popular choice for SPC flooring.

Sound reduction underlayment is designed for multi story buildings. It reduces impact noise like footsteps and dropped objects. Required by many building codes for condos and apartments. Look for underlayment with IIC and STC ratings.

Rubber underlayment is the premium option. It offers the best sound reduction and comfort. More expensive than foam or combination options. Used in high end residential and commercial projects.

Underlayment Recommendations by Subfloor Type

For concrete subfloors use a combination underlayment with vapor barrier. The vapor barrier prevents moisture from the concrete reaching the flooring. Choose 2mm thickness for most applications.

For wood subfloors use foam or combination underlayment. Vapor barrier is not essential on wood but can be used. Choose 2mm to 3mm thickness for comfort.

For existing vinyl or tile you usually do not need underlayment if the existing floor is flat and clean. Some SPC flooring can be installed directly over existing hard surfaces.

For multi story buildings use sound reduction underlayment. Check local building codes for minimum sound ratings. Choose a product with IIC rating of 50 or higher.

Common Mistakes

Using underlayment that is too thick. Thick underlayment can cause the locking system to fail. Maximum recommended thickness is 3mm for most SPC products.

Using underlayment with high compression. Cheap foam compresses over time and loses effectiveness. Choose medium or high density underlayment.

Installing underlayment with vapor barrier on wood subfloors where it can trap moisture. Use vapor barrier only on concrete or where recommended.

Skipping underlayment on uneven subfloors. Underlayment does not fix uneven subfloors. Level the subfloor first.
