What Tools Do I Need to Install SPC Flooring Complete Checklist 2026

Installing SPC flooring requires specific tools. Using the wrong tools can damage the planks or produce poor results. Here is what you need.

Cutting Tools

Utility knife for cutting underlayment and trimming labels. Score and snap method works for cutting planks widthwise. Use a straight edge and utility knife to score the plank deeply, then snap it. Circular saw or jigsaw for cutting lengthwise rips and cutting around door frames. Use a fine tooth blade designed for vinyl. Miter saw for clean angle cuts. Useful for cutting planks at 45 degrees for corners. Hand saw for small cuts where power tools are not practical.

Installation Tools

Tapping block protects the plank edge when tapping planks together. Tapping directly with a hammer damages the locking mechanism. Pull bar helps lock the last row of planks near the wall where you cannot reach with your hands. Spacers maintain the expansion gap between the flooring and the wall. Standard spacers are 8mm to 10mm wide. Rubber mallet for tapping planks without damaging them. Use with the tapping block.

Measuring and Layout Tools

Tape measure at least 5 meters long. Carpenter square for marking straight cut lines. Chalk line for marking long straight lines especially for the first row. Pencil for marking cut lines. Not required but useful.

Subfloor Preparation Tools

Moisture meter to check concrete subfloor moisture content before installation. Level 2 meters long to check subfloor flatness. Trowel if self leveling compound is needed for subfloor repairs. Shop vacuum for cleaning the subfloor before installation.

Safety Tools

Knee pads installation involves a lot of kneeling. Safety glasses when cutting planks. Dust mask if cutting with power tools. Work gloves for handling planks.

Optional But Helpful

Flooring stapler if installing underlayment that requires stapling. Jamb saw for cutting door frame bottoms to fit flooring underneath. Heat gun if you need to warm planks for bending around curved areas. Usually not needed for SPC.

What Not to Use

Do not use a hammer directly on planks. Use a tapping block and rubber mallet. Do not use glue unless the product is specifically designed for glue down installation. Do not use a wax or polish on SPC. It can damage the UV coating.
