Which Flooring Is More Dimensionally Stable Than SPC
Dimensional stability means the flooring keeps its shape and size regardless of temperature and humidity changes. SPC is better than laminate but not perfect. Some products are more stable.
SPC Stability Limitations
SPC contains PVC which is a plastic. Plastic softens in heat and hardens in cold. In a room with large windows, the SPC near the window can be warmer than the SPC near the interior wall. This temperature difference can cause slight warping.
In direct sunlight, SPC planks can develop a slight cup shape. The surface heats faster than the bottom. The top expands more than the bottom. The plank warps.
In cold warehouses before installation, SPC can shrink noticeably. When installed in the shrunken state and then warmed, the planks expand and can buckle.
MFB Mineral Fiber Stability
MFB uses a mineral fiber core with no plastic content. Minerals do not soften in heat. They do not shrink in cold. The dimensional change across the full temperature range is negligible.
This means MFB can be installed in rooms with large windows, sunrooms, and areas with temperature swings without the stability concerns that affect SPC.
Outdoor Use
