Why Do SPC Flooring Prices Vary So Much Between Chinese Factories 2025
You contact three SPC flooring factories in China. The first quotes 4.50 per square meter. The second quotes 6.00. The third quotes 7.80. All three claim to make the same product. Why is there such a big difference
The answer is that the products are not the same, even if they look similar on the surface. Here is what the price difference actually buys.
Raw Material Quality
This is the biggest factor. Limestone powder purity can range from 90 percent to 99 percent CaCO3. Higher purity costs more but produces a stronger core. PVC resin can be virgin or recycled. Virgin costs 30 to 50 percent more. The difference is invisible in the finished plank but shows up in long term durability.
Core Density
A standard SPC core density is 1.9 to 2.1 g/cm3. Lower density cores are cheaper to produce but more prone to denting and locking mechanism failure. Higher density cores cost more but provide better performance. You can test this by tapping the plank edge. A higher density core has a solid sound. A lower density core sounds hollow.
Wear Layer Thickness
Wear layer thickness is measured in mil thousandths of an inch. A 12mil wear layer costs about 0.30 to 0.50 less per square meter than a 20mil wear layer. The wear layer determines how long the floor lasts. A 12mil floor may last 5 to 10 years in residential use. A 20mil floor can last 15 to 20 years.
Locking System Quality
Not all locking systems are the same. Better locking systems use more material in the click profile. They hold tighter and resist separation. The difference adds about 0.20 to 0.40 per square meter to production cost. Planks with poor locking systems develop gaps within months.
UV Coating Quality
The UV coating protects against scratches and fading. Better coatings use higher quality raw materials and are applied in multiple layers. Some factories use a single thin coat. The UV coating cost difference is about 0.15 to 0.30 per square meter.
Production Process Control
Factories with proper quality control test at every stage. They reject defective planks before packaging. Cheap factories make fewer checks. Their defect rate may be 5 to 8 percent. Good factories keep it under 2 percent. The cost of quality control adds about 0.20 to 0.40 per square meter.
Packaging Quality
Carton quality, pallet strength, and moisture barrier packaging all add cost. Cheap factories use thinner cartons that crush during shipping. Good packaging costs about 0.10 to 0.20 more per square meter. Damaged cartons often mean damaged planks.
Summary
The price difference between a 4.50 factory and a 7.80 factory is not random. It reflects real differences in materials and process control. A low price does not mean you are getting a deal. It means the factory cut costs somewhere. Understanding where the costs go helps you decide what quality level is right for your market.
