Why Is My SPC Floor Fading Near Windows After 6 Months 2026

You installed beautiful SPC flooring. Six months later, the area near the window looks lighter than the rest of the room. This is a common issue and it does not mean your floor is low quality. Here is why it happens.

UV Light Is the Cause

The sun emits UV ultraviolet light through windows. UV light breaks down the pigments in the decorative layer of the flooring. Over time, the color fades in areas that receive direct sunlight. The fading is gradual and most noticeable near windows and sliding glass doors.

UV Coating Quality Matters

All SPC flooring has a UV coating on the surface. The purpose of the UV coating is to protect against scratches and UV damage. Higher quality UV coatings provide better UV protection. They resist fading longer. Lower quality UV coatings are thinner or use cheaper UV stabilizers. They degrade faster under direct sunlight.

The difference between a good UV coating and a cheap one is not visible when the floor is new. It shows after 6 to 12 months.

Window Position and Sunlight Exposure

South facing windows in the northern hemisphere receive the most direct sunlight. Floors near these windows fade faster. West facing windows get afternoon sun which is intense. East facing windows get morning sun which is less intense. North facing windows get minimal direct sunlight. Floors in rooms with large windows or sliding glass doors fade faster than rooms with small windows. Second floor rooms often receive more sunlight than ground floor rooms.

What You Can Do

Use curtains or blinds during peak sunlight hours. UV blocking window film reduces UV transmission by 99 percent without blocking light. Area rugs protect high traffic sunny areas. Rearrange furniture periodically so fading is less noticeable. Choose lighter colored flooring. Light colors show fading less than dark colors. For rooms with high sun exposure, ask the factory for UV enhanced coating.

Is Fading Covered by Warranty

Most SPC flooring warranties cover fading only if the product fails to meet industry standards. Normal fading from sunlight exposure is usually not covered because it depends on conditions at the installation site. Ask the factory about their fading warranty before purchasing if sun exposure is a concern.
