Why Some Flooring Gets Gaps in Winter and Some Does Not
Winter is the season of floor gaps. Homeowners in cold climates see gaps appear between planks every year. The gaps collect dirt and look unattractive. In spring, the gaps close again. But some floors stay tight all year. This article explains the difference.
What Happens in Winter
In winter, heating systems dry out the indoor air. Humidity drops to 20 to 30 percent in many homes. Flooring materials that contain wood fibers or PVC lose moisture and contract.
Laminate contracts the most. The HDF core releases moisture and shrinks. Gaps of 1mm to 2mm appear between planks. The gaps are visible and collect debris.
SPC also contracts in winter. The PVC component in the core shrinks in dry conditions. The gaps are smaller than laminate but still noticeable.
MFB Does Not Contract
MFB uses a mineral fiber core. Minerals do not contain moisture. They do not release moisture in dry air. The core does not shrink.
An MFB floor installed in summer stays tight in winter. No gaps appear. No dirt collects between planks. The floor looks the same in February as it did in August.
This is one of the main advantages homeowners notice after switching from laminate or SPC to MFB.
