Why Your Waterproof Laminate Floor Has Gaps in Winter

You installed waterproof laminate flooring in the summer. It looked perfect. Then winter came and gaps appeared between some planks. This is a common complaint. Understanding why it happens helps you decide whether to fix it or choose a different product next time.

Why Laminate Contracts in Winter

Laminate flooring has a high density fiberboard core. HDF is made from compressed wood fibers. Wood fibers absorb moisture in humid air and release moisture in dry air.

In winter, indoor humidity drops. Heating systems dry out the air. The HDF core releases moisture and contracts. Each plank becomes slightly narrower. The total shrinkage across a 20 foot room adds up to visible gaps.

This happens to standard laminate and waterproof laminate alike. Waterproof laminate has a treated core that resists liquid water, but it still responds to air humidity changes. The treatment reduces moisture absorption but does not eliminate it.

The 3 percent and 8 percent swell rate ratings refer to water immersion performance, not humidity response. Even a 3 percent rated waterproof laminate will shrink in dry winter air.

Why SPC Also Gaps in Winter

SPC flooring has a PVC based core that also responds to temperature. In cold weather, the PVC contracts. The contraction is small per plank but noticeable across a large room.

Unlike laminate, SPC does not re expand when warm weather returns. PVC that has shifted position does not slide back into place. The gaps may close partially but often remain visible.

Laminate can sometimes recover when humidity returns in spring. The wood fibers absorb moisture and the planks expand again. But the recovery is rarely perfect. Repeated seasonal cycling causes permanent gaps over time.

What Flooring Does Not Shrink

MFB flooring uses a mineral fiber core. No wood fibers. No PVC. The mineral material does not absorb or release moisture. It does not expand or contract with humidity or temperature changes.

A room installed with MFB in summer looks the same in winter. No gaps appear at the joints. No seasonal movement. The floor stays flat and tight year round.

MFB is the only click lock flooring that eliminates seasonal gapping. For rooms where appearance matters and seasonal gaps are unacceptable, MFB delivers what other products cannot.
