Will Laminate Flooring Scratch From Furniture What to Use for Protection
Furniture is one of the main causes of scratches on laminate flooring. Chairs, tables, sofas, and beds all leave marks when moved. The good news is scratches from furniture are almost entirely preventable. This guide covers the protection methods that work.
Why Furniture Damages Laminate
Laminate has a hard surface but it is not indestructible. When furniture is dragged across the floor, the pressure concentrates on small contact points. Chair legs, table legs, and sofa feet all create high pressure areas.
The aluminum oxide coating on laminate resists scratches but it cannot stop a sharp metal chair leg being dragged across the surface. Once the coating is scratched, the damage is permanent.
Felt Pads
Felt pads are the most common and effective protection. Stick on felt pads are available at any hardware store. Apply them to the bottom of every furniture leg that contacts the floor.
Choose the right size pad. The pad should cover the entire bottom surface of the leg. Small pads concentrate weight and can still cause dents. For heavy furniture, use larger or thicker pads.
Replace felt pads every 6 months. They collect grit and dirt over time. A dirty felt pad acts like sandpaper on the floor. If the pad feels rough or has visible debris, replace it immediately.
Chair Mats
Office chairs are the most damaging furniture for laminate flooring. The rolling casters create continuous abrasion. A chair mat is essential for any desk area.
Choose a hard floor chair mat designed for laminate. Do not use carpet mats on laminate. Carpet mats have gripper points on the bottom that can scratch the laminate surface.
Clear polycarbonate mats are the best choice. They are transparent, durable, and do not yellow over time. They also lay flat without curling at the edges.
Furniture Sliders
When rearranging furniture, use furniture sliders instead of dragging. Sliders are placed under furniture legs and allow the piece to glide across the floor. They distribute the weight evenly and prevent scratches.
For heavy items like sofas and bookshelves, use sliders with a smooth felt bottom. For lighter items like dining chairs, simple plastic sliders work.
Lift, Do Not Drag
The simplest rule is always lift furniture instead of dragging. Lifting takes more effort but it is the only 100 percent effective way to prevent scratches.
For large furniture that cannot be lifted, place a folded blanket or furniture moving blanket under the legs. Slide the furniture across the blanket. This distributes the pressure and prevents scratches.
What About Rubber Furniture Stops
Rubber cups that go under furniture legs are not recommended for laminate. Rubber can leave marks on the surface. Some rubber compounds can react with the laminate finish over time. Stick with felt pads for laminate flooring.
Regular Checks
Inspect furniture pads monthly. Check for wear, debris, or脱落. Replace worn pads immediately. A few minutes of inspection every month saves hours of floor repair later.
