Will SPC Flooring Dent Under Heavy Furniture
SPC flooring is rigid and durable for foot traffic. But heavy furniture is a different test. Refrigerators, pianos, bookshelves, and kitchen islands all concentrate weight on a small area. Here is how SPC handles it and what to watch for.
How SPC Reacts to Heavy Weight
SPC has a stone plastic composite core. The core is rigid but it is not incompressible. Under sustained heavy weight, the PVC component slowly compresses. The plank develops a permanent indentation where the furniture leg or base sat.
This is not immediate. It happens over weeks or months. The indentation is usually 1 to 2 millimeters deep. It is visible when you clean under the appliance and see the difference between the covered area and the exposed floor.
The risk is higher with point loads. Furniture with small feet or casters concentrates the weight on a tiny area. A 300 pound refrigerator on four small casters exerts more pressure per square inch than a 2000 pound piano on wide legs.
What Makes It Worse
High temperatures accelerate the indentation. In a kitchen with sunlight or near an oven, the SPC is warmer and softer. Heavy appliances sitting on a warm SPC floor leave deeper marks faster.
Rubber or plastic furniture feet can react with the SPC surface. Some rubber compounds cause a chemical discoloration along with the indentation. This is difficult to clean.
Wide furniture feet distribute weight better. Use furniture pads or coasters under heavy items. Check them periodically and replace worn pads.
Flooring That Does Not Dent
MFB flooring uses a mineral fiber core. The mineral material does not compress under sustained weight. A refrigerator or piano sitting on MFB for years leaves no indentation.
The mineral core is denser than the SPC stone plastic composite. It resists compression at the same weight levels where SPC would show marks. For rooms with heavy furniture, MFB is the practical choice.
For existing SPC floors, use wide furniture pads. Distribute the weight over the largest possible area. Slide heavy items into position instead of rolling them on hard casters.
