Commercial spaces have different requirements than residential. Traffic levels are higher, spills are more frequent, and durability expectations are greater. Here is how to choose LVT for commercial use.
Wear Layer Requirements
The wear layer is the most important factor for commercial LVT. For light commercial like small offices, boutique retail: 20mil wear layer minimum. For medium commercial like restaurants, hotels, medical clinics: 20mil to 28mil wear layer. For heavy commercial like grocery stores, schools, airports: 28mil to 40mil wear layer.
Do not use residential grade LVT with 12mil wear layer in any commercial setting. It will wear through quickly.
Installation Type for Commercial
Glue down LVT is the standard for commercial installations. It is more stable under rolling loads. It does not gap or shift like floating floors. Click lock LVT can be used in light commercial settings with low rolling loads. It is not recommended for heavy commercial use.
Check your warranty. Many LVT manufacturers have separate warranties for residential and commercial use. Commercial warranties are shorter and have different coverage terms.
Subfloor Requirements for Commercial
Commercial subfloors must be flatter than residential. The standard is 3mm over 3 meters. Self leveling compound is often needed. Use a moisture test before installation. Concrete moisture requirements are the same as residential.

Ask for test reports specific to commercial applications. Rolling load test for shopping carts and dollies. Stain resistance test for commercial chemicals. Light fastness test for fading in commercial settings. Wear layer abrasion test for traffic durability.
